Lego – The Art of the Brick

I’ve always been interested in the link between limitations and creativity. One might think that when an artist limits himself to using only pre-made plastic bricks, it would decrease creativity. However, that doesn’t seem to be true.

In my opinion, limitations create exciting challenges that increase creativity. That seems to be the case for Nathan Sawaya, an AFOL (Adult Fan of Lego). Mr. Sawaya loves Lego so much that he left his career as a lawyer to become a full-time Lego artist. He opened a studio in New York where he creates amazing sculptures like this blue man. See more of his work on his website, The Art of the Brick.

Which would YOU rather be, a lawyer or a Lego artist?

Wow that’s an original sculpture! I agree that limitations can actually increase creativity. When I make mosaics, if I have too many materials (or too many colours) at hand sometimes I actually get stuck – too many choices – or go for the obvious choice, while when I’m limited I actually strive to find the best option. Well thought.

I would love to see your mosaics, Cristina! Do you have photos of them on your blog?
