Learning a new language can be boring. Sometimes you must memorize and repeat things that don’t seem very useful. Such as, “This is a pen.”
How many times do you have the urge to walk up to someone and say, “This is a pen”? Never. It seems like a useless phrase, but it’s an important step in building your grammar and vocabulary skills. You must crawl before you can walk.
Eventually, you will be able to use what you know in the real world. You will be able to have conversations in English about things that really interest you.
By the way, I created this little cartoon myself at MakeBeliefsComix.com. Why don’t you go there and make one, too? Try making one in English and email it to a friend. That’s a fun way to practice your real world English!

Hahaha. On the Trains in Japan school age boys would dare eachother to come talk to me in english. The one time one of them got up the nerve to do it he actually said. “This is a pen.” so funny.
Robynn, that’s hilarious! I guess I was wrong about no one ever having an urge to use that phrase in real life!
Great post, and great comic!
Thanks for the link, too. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the words of encouragement, Wendy!
